1115a-WEIRD INTERNATIONAL NEWS

A UK mailman who hoarded thousands of letters and packages at his home went to jail. The middle-aged man admitted to hoarding thousands of postal items, saying he had taken them home because his mailbag was too heavy for him to carry.

So maybe you’ve done this. You really, really need a couple of days off, but you have no vacation left. You’re not sick, so you pull the old “my great aunt died” excuse. A UK woman lied her way to 66 days of bereavement leave, concocting death stories about five people in her life. She said her ex-husband had hanged himself, her mother died in surgery, and her brother, aunt and uncle had died within a week.

1145a-STUDENTS FEEL PHONE ‘WITHDRAWAL’ WHEN CUT OFF FOR A DAY

College students asked to give up their phones and other digital media for 24 hours reported withdrawal‑like symptoms and mood changes in recent “digital detox” studies. When phones, social media, and streaming were taken away, many students described feeling anxious, restless, bored, and even “lonely,” with some comparing the experience to going “cold turkey.” Researchers say the most common reactions were fear of missing out, trouble concentrating, and a sense of being cut off from friends and family.

115p-WE SPEND TWO WEEKS IN THE BATHROOM

A study of bathroom habits finds the average adult spends two weeks a year in the smallest room in the house, using it as a haven for reading, scrolling, thinking and pondering, among other things.  While the bathroom is a source of solace from life’s stresses for many people, those who have to go often find it isolating and shameful. That group includes people with an overactive bladder and other ailments that make using the bathroom a chore rather than a respite.

145p-Research says that, despite what your mother told you, sitting up straight is bad for your back. [They also said to feel free to run with scissors.]

215p-EATING TOGETHER WITHOUT PHONES MAY BE KEY TO COMBATING OBESITY

It’s not just the Mediterranean diet that can keep you healthy — so can the Mediterranean way of eating as a family, according to a study. Researchers say that eating together at the dinner table without phones could be key to combating childhood obesity. While the Mediterranean diet has long been seen as having health benefits, researchers have found its cultural traditions of conversation and slower eating can even prevent eating disorders.

345p-HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY WNBA

The WNBA came into existence 30 years ago — on April 24, 1996, when the NBA Board of Governors approved its creation. The league launched with eight founding franchises split between Eastern and Western Conferences, including the Charlotte Sting, Houston Comets, New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks, and four others. Unlike previous attempts at professional women’s basketball in the U.S., the WNBA had something its predecessors lacked: the full institutional and financial backing of the NBA, right down to a “Logo Woman” design that deliberately mirrored the iconic NBA logo. Riding a wave of enthusiasm following the U.S. women’s national team’s gold medal performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics, the league tipped off its inaugural season on June 21, 1997, with the New York Liberty defeating the Los Angeles Sparks 67–57 before a crowd of more than 14,000.

415p-QUIETCATION

There’s a new travel trend – quietcation. It combines the relaxation of a vacation with a digital detox. Vacationers say the quietcation has resulted in better concentration, relief from burnout, and less stress.
