1015a-3 SPECIAL DAYS/WEEKS

Hurricane Preparedness Week(A thing we here in North Iowa can get behind)

Zipper Day(I think I just made all of you wearing pants or jeans look down)

Viral Video Day(Hey make my promo video go viral and share it)

Only about 40 percent of doctors tell their obese patients to lose weight. [Mine didn’t tell me to lose weight, but I did notice a line on my most recent bill that read “Replacement of waiting room chair cushion.”]

The average pet owner spends over $4,500 on their pet’s basic needs every year. [And by “basic needs” does that include my cable TV subscription so my dog can watch Animal Planet?]

A UK couple who noticed clothes and jewelry going missing discovered the culprit was their nanny. The couple spotted photos of the nanny wearing the wife’s clothing and jewelry on Facebook.

1045a- HOW TO HUG AND WHY

Want to give your child or spouse a boost today? How a good, long hug? Research shows that if we hold a hug for at least six seconds, we optimize the flow of mood-boosting chemicals. According to studies, a family member is 47 percent more likely to feel close to a family member who often expresses affection than to one who rarely does. Also, frequent huggers have lower blood pressure and higher levels of oxytocin (a chemical that promotes bonding).

1115a-MOST PHOTOS TAKEN ON PHONES ARE NEVER LOOKED AT AGAIN

A survey finds three-quarters of photos taken with smartphones are never looked at again. And the number of unviewed is even higher for selfies: 87 percent of selfies taken are never looked at again. Probably because we take six of the same selfie and use the last one. The survey found the average person does a digital declutter about once every six months. However, 20 percent of you never dump old photos.

1145a-SEEING GREEN

New research reveals a colorful way to ease pain. Duke University scientists found that people with chronic pain who wore green-tinted glasses cut back on painkiller use and were four times more likely to say that anxiety related to their pain had improved.

145p-BULLIED LIFE

Being bullied sticks with you for a long time after you’re out of school. A long-term study of the mental scars that bullying leaves finds its effects are still detectable 40 years later. People who were bullied as kids have a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts once they grow up. They also have a lower quality of life. Lower life satisfaction. And are less likely to be in a relationship.

215p-VOICE FRAUD

The days of phone conversations with anyone other than family or friends are coming to an end because of voiceprinting. Through technological advances, thieves can capture a recording of your voice and then use a software program to generate an imitation “deepfake” version that lets them impersonate you. That voiceprint can then be used to call your bank and have funds transferred out of your accounts.

245p-BRAIN FREEZE

Women are better equipped to eat a pint of ice cream than men. Turns out that guys are more susceptible to “brain freeze” caused by downing ice cream or cold drinks too quickly.

345p-WEDDING INTERRUPTION

You know that point in the wedding ceremony when the question “Does anyone know why this couple may not wed?” is asked? Just how many times does someone actually try to interrupt the wedding? Fourteen percent of married women report that someone tried to stop their wedding in mid-ceremony.

415p-ROAD RAGE CURE
